It appears that in the Corinthian church, women were taking part in the discussions of prophecy (see our comments under 1 Corinthians 14:31). Paul’s instruction matches that of 1 Timothy 2:11: Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.
Paul (and Jesus himself) approves of women’s endeavours to learn (see Luke 10:39–42). But in the worship service their learning should take place quietly, so as not to become shameful.
At home, on the other hand, women can freely ask questions and enter discussions.
35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
