Jesus Christ expected the people in his village to respond positively to his teaching. They were his friends and family, they knew his character, they had grown up with the Old Testament Scriptures, and they knew the promises of God. However, they ignore him and reject him.
Mark 6:6 is clear that their lack of faith caused Jesus’ amazement. Here Jesus was among the covenant community of God and yet they do not recognize God’s King and trust him. Jesus Christ is amazed by this unbelief because it comes from people in whom you would expect to find belief. It comes from people who were looking forward to the coming of the Messiah, people who belonged to the covenant community of God and therefore knew God’s promises.
There is only one other occasion in the New Testament where Jesus is likewise said to have been amazed, and that is in Matthew 8:10. There, Jesus sees the faith of a Roman soldier (a gentile) and he is amazed. From these two incidents we discover that Jesus Christ is amazed (filled with wonder) when he finds faith in places where faith is not expected (among gentiles who do not know the Old Testament Scriptures), and he is also amazed when he finds unbelief in places where faith is expected (among Jews who have grown up with the Old Testament Scriptures).
6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.
