The gathering of the tribes should have been sufficient evidence of God’s presence with Gideon. What should follow is the stage of Gideon’s war against the Midianites. Instead, even though he is empowered by the Spirit of the Lord and surrounded by a vast army, Gideon doubts that God would deliver Israel by his strength, even though that was what God had promised. As a result, Gideon puts God to the test.
