Judges 7:16 (ESV)
16And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars.
Gideon’s division of his forces into three companies is in keeping with traditional military custom, as also found in Judges 9:43, 1 Samuel 11:11, 1 Samuel 13:17–18, and 2 Samuel 18:2.
