The alternative would be that these deeds precede them, as if their works of obedience and faithfulness opened for them the gates to blessedness. That is emphatically not the case, as it is Jesus’ saving work that carries sinners into God’s gracious presence. Their deeds, though, are not left behind or forgotten at the door; instead, they “follow” them into the presence and joy of the Lord. See further Matthew 25:21, Matthew 25:23; Luke 16:9.
