The connection between Joshua 22 and Joshua 23

Joshua 23:1–16 (ESV)

1 A long time afterward, when the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,

Where Joshua 22 focuses on the unity of God’s people with one another, Joshua 23 focuses on their relationship with unbelievers. It is almost as if the Spirit has deliberately put them in contrast with each other. Joshua 22: Are you going to unite with others in submission to God? When you know brothers who love the Lord and seek to obey him, will you treat them with respect and honour them as brothers? Joshua 23: Are you going to unite with unbelievers in rebellion against God? When you know someone has no concern for the Lord, will you listen to them and treat them as brothers or will you separate yourself in obedience to God?
