A Dreaded and Fearsome Nation
The military might and character of the Babylonians made them into a dreaded and fearsome
people. The nations were terrified of them because of their immense power which they used without any restraint to conquer them. The nations were so scared of them that they literally froze before them.
Their justice
did not mean that they were concerned about doing what was right, fair, and good. Rather it referred to them being a law to themselves. They paid no attention to God’s law. They made up their own rules that suited their way of life and plans to the detriment of others. These laws, which were unjust and unrighteous, governed and controlled their lives.
The word dignity
did not reveal them to be a kind, considerate, compassionate, or gracious people. Rather it described the pride that lived in their hearts making them to be self-righteous and self-sufficient in need of no one and nothing else.
These two qualities went ahead of them into battle causing dread and fear to descend upon their victims paralyzing them into defeat.
7 They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.
