Habakkuk's Analysis of the Babylonians’ Lifestyle
The word therefore
referred to the Babylonian victory over the Israelites as described in Habakkuk 1:15. By catching the Israelites the Babylonians plundered God’s people and deprived them of their belongings. This enriched them, which enabled them to live in luxury and enjoy eating the finest of foods. But it impoverished the Israelites. The Babylonians’ success led them to offer a sacrifice to their net and dragnet. These tools of destruction that made them rich were turned into gods as objects of their worship.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich.
