Service in response to God’s faithfulness is another theme that has appeared several times in the book of Joshua. Once again it is prominent—especially in the title attributed to Joshua, the servant of the Lord
(Joshua 24:29).
Joshua’s title affirms that service is the appropriate response to God’s faithfulness. Because the Lord is fighting for you, pick up your sword and serve him with boldness (Joshua 1–12). Because the Lord has given you an inheritance, go and live in your cities and obey his commandments (Joshua 13–22). Because the Lord alone is God, separate yourself from the pagans and throw away your idols (Joshua 23–24). Joshua served the Lord, Eleazar served the Lord, Israel served the Lord—service is the response which God is calling for.
29 After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being 110 years old.
