Daniel 1:17 (ESV)

17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

We remember that in their training they also have to deal with all kinds of things that are not according to the will and teaching of God. The Lord does not keep them away from this. He makes sure that they have a thorough knowledge of the wisdom of Babylon, similar to how Moses had to be well educated in the wisdom of Egypt. It is precisely by knowing the wisdom of the world that they can later be influential people who give proper guidance to the people of God living in the world. You have to know the wisdom of the world to be able to judge it properly and refute it where necessary.

We read that these four young men are well educated in the wisdom and science of Babylon. It is God who gives them what they need in the process and enables them to judge and discern with wisdom as they study these books. The four of them learn through the Spirit of God what true wisdom is in order to be able to judge the wisdom of the world. We too can use this rule in our day (see 1 Corinthians 1:17–31).

The Lord gives them the gifts they need to successfully complete their education and in the process, he also gives them the wisdom to discern well. God gives Daniel the extra gift of explaining visions and dreams. He is told by God what certain dreams and visions mean. We see this portrayed very clearly in the remainder of the book.
