1 Peter 1:1–2 (ESV)

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

1 Peter 1:1–2 forms the introduction to Peter’s letter. It consists of three parts:

  1. The name of the writer of the letter

  2. An identification of the recipients of this letter

  3. A word of greeting

This three-part structure is characteristic of most New Testament letters and runs parallel to how letters were commonly structured at that time.
