  2. Exposition

What relation is there between “grace” and “peace”?

1 Peter 1:2 (ESV)

2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Grace is the free favour of God poured out on the undeserving on account of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Peace is the harmony that redeemed sinners experience in their relation to God and to together. The two are connected as cause and effect. Because of God’s grace in Jesus Christ, people enjoy peace. As one grows in appreciation for God’s grace in Jesus Christ, one enjoys in ever greater measure the delightful taste of peace with God and with one another.
