Deep within each person is a desire for justice and fairness (be it commonly lopsided in our own favour). In answer to that desire, we quickly find ourselves taking matters in our own hands. The Lord, however, has taught his people that vengeance is his department. In our present chapter, the Lord drives home that he will execute his vengeance in perfect measure at his time. It follows that we are to be patient in our afflictions and continue to beseech him to act.
The reference to the great winepress of the wrath of God
demonstrates that God’s justice on those who disregard his word and hurt his people is radical. Awareness of this reality can only fill those who take God seriously with deep humility. Were it not for the fact that on the cross of Calvary Jesus’ blood was pressed from him as he experienced the winepress of God’s wrath in our place, we too would be eternally crushed by God’s righteous anger. What mercy that Christ took the judgment we deserved!
14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand.
