Not only has Christ given us this faith of equal standing (2 Peter 1:1–2), but he has also equipped us to serve him in this life. By his Spirit (divine power) he has given us everything necessary for godly living.
Everything we need for godly living is not the same as success in everything to which we put our hands and hope to achieve. In this sinful world we will continue to experience trouble and hardship, pain and disappointment. We have not been freed from such experiences. But when it comes to the Christian life—fighting against sin and pursuing godliness—we have all that we need.
So what specifically do we need for godly living? God’s divine power (the Holy Spirit living in us) and knowledge of him (knowledge of biblical truth). When we know what God wants from us, we can know what a godly life looks like. By his Spirit, we are also empowered to actually do the good things that God expects from us.
Practically, this truth encourages us to know that there is no privileged elite in the church who have been given a special blessing
by the Spirit that we lack. Neither is there a secret source of knowledge that we need to discover outside of God’s Word. We do not need Christ and healing, or Christ and wealth, or Christ and miracles in order to live in this world—we have been equipped by the gospel. Knowing God and receiving his Spirit are all we need.
