Leaders come and go. Some try to stay in office for more than two or three or even four terms. But even powerful leaders become aged and eventually die or have to resign. A new leader needs to be elected. The Christian community has, therefore, an astonishing claim. Jesus Christ bears all authority in heaven and on earth, an authority that has not been given for one or two terms as a general secretary of the United Nations, or even a third term. He said, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
