In 1 Kings 2, David says about Solomon that he is wise (see 1 Kings 2:6 and 1 Kings 2:9). The fact that Solomon knew God’s Word well is evident from the decision he made regarding Joab. Joab, like Adonijah, flees to the altar. That was a request for mercy. Solomon had given mercy to Adonijah after his rebellion (see 1 Kings 1:49–53), but Joab was killed (see 1 Kings 2:28–35). Solomon knew what God’s Word prescribed: God had said in Exodus 21:12–14 that a sly murderer should be killed.
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.
