Will we for instance meet Solomon in heaven, if we consider this passage? The question is understandable, because Solomon broke the covenant, and whoever breaks the covenant chooses destruction. Whoever continually disobeys God will perish in eternal judgment.
If the Lord has spoken in 1 Kings 11:11-13 of the—let’s say—ordinary covenant, then the penalty would be eternal death. But this is about a different covenant and a different punishment. Here the Lord speaks about the covenant God made with David. It is called the Davidic covenant.
The Davidic covenant is God’s promise that the throne of David will last forever. There will always be a son of David on the throne, but there is a condition—if they keep God’s commandments. If they do not, God will hit them hard and punish them like a father punishes his children. That is what the Lord says to David at the making of that covenant, and that is what happened to Solomon. See 2 Samuel 7:8–17 and Psalm 89:19–37.
David's throne still stands. Jesus is the son of David who always fulfills all the conditions of the Davidic covenant. He is the eternal king on David’s throne. As the angel says to Mary:
“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32–33
11 Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.
