In Scripture seven
is a full number (e.g., the days of creation). “Seven” plagues denotes the fulness of divine blows God intends to send. The phrase “seven plagues” appears in Leviticus 26:21 (the only place in Scripture outside the book of Revelation) to indicate how God will punish Israel’s persistence in sin. Three other times in Leviticus 26 we read that the Lord will discipline or strike Israel “seven times” for her sins (Leviticus 26:18, Leviticus 26:24, Leviticus 26:28). Clearly, the word “seven” refers to fulness of divine blows (see also Psalm 79:12).
1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished.
