What is brotherly affection?

2 Peter 1:7 (ESV)

7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

Brotherly affection (kindness) refers to fraternal love—the love that family members extend toward one another and not the love for those outside the family. Generally one expects family members to care for one another and this same care must be evident in the Christian community. Believers have become brother and sister on account of Christ (2 Peter 1:10; 2 Peter 3:15), and thus a deep concern for one another is to mark the life of those who have received new birth (1 Peter 1:22; 1 John 4:17).1 This is not primarily an encouragement to feel warmly to one another or even like one another, but to act lovingly toward one another. As Paul demonstrates in 1 Corinthians 13:1–13, love is seen in deeds.
