Brotherly affection

2 Peter 1:7 (ESV)

7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

It is necessary in particular to mention brotherly affection because the church of Jesus Christ is catholic (universal); this means it includes believers from many backgrounds and places. By nature, however, we do not want to be catholic. We want to form cliques with people who speak our language and think the way we do. It is hard to love people that are different. Often this can mean that we actually stay away from worship services, because love is difficult and we are annoyed by others. However, this must not be the case. We must do what we can to promote fellowship in God’s church, recognizing that this is our family to which God has joined us. There is nowhere else to go.
