The writer calls for the race to be run—a racetrack with marathon runners. Perhaps it is even better to think of a relay race because of the centuries-long line of witnesses who have always handed over the baton, also to us.
Such a sport is all about commitment and endurance. We must run with endurance the race that is set before us.
So, be determined. Keep going. Do not give up. The writer mentions the same word (hupomonè) with the call of Hebrews 10:36 (keep on holding on!) and with Jesus (in Hebrews 12:2): Jesus endured; he endured the cross, despising the shame. In Hebrews 12:7 it also says: It is for discipline that you have to endure.
Know that in all these difficulties and obstacles your Father in heaven is busy with you.
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
