Why is the bramble’s invitation absurd?

Judges 9:15 (ESV)

15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

The bramble’s claim is remarkable, since a bramble only grows a foot or two off the ground. Thus, how could trees get under a low-spreading bramble for shade? Anyone who tries to find shade under it is more likely to get pricked by its thorns than protected. And yet what the bramble next says is even more absurd, that if the trees will not take refuge in his shade, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon. How can fire come out of a wild thorn bush and burn up a whole forest?1
