Daniel 5:17 (ESV)

17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation.

Daniel stands among the 1,000 or so partygoers. Despite the celebration, fear can be seen on their faces. In awe, they look at the symbols written in such a mysterious way on the wall. The top scholars of the world have no explanation. Even all the gifts offered by the king cannot entice anyone to come up with a solution.

When Daniel is fetched and given the floor, he points out that he is only human. He is in the service of God, the Most High. He is God’s servant and prophet. He does not need any gifts from the king. Those can better be given to others. He is not going to speak the truth because he would be getting all kinds of rewards. He is not a prophet for profit. If the Lord wants to speak through him, then he will pass it on.
