Daniel 5:26 (ESV)

26 This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end;

The first word “mene” is repeated. The repetition indicates that this is emphasized. This word means numbered. The Lord knows the times. He sees everything. Everything goes according to his plan. The days of Belshazzar and the Babylonian Empire are numbered. The days of the golden head as seen by Nebuchadnezzar are numbered. They have come to an end. The time of the silver and bronze has come (see Daniel 2:32).

However much Belshazzar exalted himself, here he learns that he is but a small and mortal man. All human beings have to realize this time and again in their lives. One’s death will come whether you are young or old. What matters is that you have made your life count in the right way. Did it count in such a way that you dedicated your life to Christ and his love? Did it count in such a way that you are a citizen of Christ’s kingdom?
