1. 2 Peter 1:14 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does Peter mean by saying that he will put his body off?

2 Peter 1:14 (ESV)

14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.

In the Greek Peter speaks only of putting aside his tent. With this he is referring figuratively to his body as a temporary dwelling place, similar to the way that Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians 5:1–4.1 The body is weak and transient just like a tent is a weak and non-permanent structure.2 Peter believes that he will die soon and that he does not have much longer to live. Yet, like Paul, he also believes that there is life after death (see 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23).3
