  2. Exposition

What does it mean for two to become one flesh?

Mark 10:8 (ESV)

8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh.

Two become one flesh in a physical relationship. Men and women were created as biologically complementary beings and in their sexual union in marriage their duality gives place to a structural unity. It is a relationship meant to be more intimate and binding than any other relationship. The sexual relation in marriage is meant to go with a union that is seen in all other aspects of married life. One flesh is thus not limited only to sexual union but being faithful and united in thought and actions.1 Marriage is the closest conceivable bond possible between two human beings.
