Why is it such a bad thing that Gideon asked for a sign?

Judges 6:17 (ESV)

17 And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.

God’s promise in Judges 6:16 was not enough for Gideon. In the previous cycle, Barak indicated he would only go on the condition that Deborah go with him. But here, the Lord himself appeared to Gideon, promised to be with him, and still Gideon is reluctant.1
