Daniel now sees the Ancient of Days and another person, who is like a Son of Man.
This is someone who seems like an ordinary person, and yet he is more than a human being. Two things, one is mentioned in this verse and the other in Daniel 7:14, point to this very clearly. In this verse we see that the Son of Man comes with the clouds of heaven to the Ancient of Days. Coming with the clouds in the Bible is something that is associated with God. No man in the Bible sails up to heaven in his own strength. Elijah goes up to heaven in a chariot of fire with horses, but not with clouds, see 2 Kings 2:11. We only read about this at the return of Christ when believers will be caught up on the clouds to meet the Lord Jesus in the air, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18. We read of clouds as being God’s chariot or surrounding his glory in Psalm 97:1–2, The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Another example is Psalm 104:3, He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind.
Coming on the clouds indicates a Divine Person, and as we study the entire Bible we realize that this is the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus speaks in Matthew 24:1–51 about his return after he has first gone into heaven. We then hear in Matthew 24:30, And then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory.
In this passage in Matthew 24, the Lord Jesus reveals who this man of Daniel 7:13–14 is. It is he and Daniel 7:13 is a prophecy of his ascension. He tells us in Matthew 24:30 that he will also return to earth on a set day. The Lord Jesus also pointed to Daniel 7:13–14 when he stood before the Jewish Council. He there shows that he is the Saviour who is more than a human being. He is also God. In Matthew 26 Caiaphas asks the Lord Jesus if he is the Christ, the Son of God, and the Lord Jesus answers him, You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven
(Matthew 26:64). Here the Lord Jesus clearly refers back to Daniel 7:13. He says to the Sanhedrin, That is Me!
Jesus himself gives the explanation of this text, and endorses it with his divine authority.
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
