From the New Testament and also later literature relating to Samaritans, we learn that what they called “the Power” was a kind of name by which angelic or divine beings were called, and it could also have been an epithet for God. Thus, the title “Great" or "Great Power” is believed to have been a Samaritan name for Yahweh.1,2We see in this that the people gave Simon divine status. Simon’s activities with magic are for the purposes of self-praise and gaining power and wealth.
10 They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called Great.”
