Tombs cut from rock were more expensive to excavate and maintain than graves in the ground. They generally were family tombs and only afforded by the rich. Jesus is being buried in Joseph’s own family tomb, in the words of the prophet Isaiah, he was made with the rich in his death (Isaiah 53:9). These rock-hewn tombs consisted of a main chamber with spaces for multiple burials. That’s why the women were able to enter the tomb (Mark 16:5).
46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
