Genesis 1:26–2:3 (ESV)

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Human beings have been created in God’s image in order to enjoy fellowship with him. The purpose of creation is not primarily to create a world in which human beings can live, work, and flourish. Rather, the purpose of creation is to create a world in which human beings can live and enjoy relationship with God. Human beings were thus not made for work, but for worship. Indeed, the chief end of man is to glorify God (worship) and enjoy him forever.
