How was the ground cursed?

Genesis 3:18–19 (ESV)

18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.

The curse of God was upon the ground because of what Adam did. Adam himself was not cursed, but his workplace was and now the ground would be unfruitful so that it worked against man rather than with him. Instead of submitting to man, it resists and eventually swallows him. The thorns and thistles are inedible growth which is now produced. These plants prevent other fruit-bearing plants from growing in order to provide the food needed for sustenance.1 As as result, survival will now always be a challenge, with the threat of death constantly looming over man. Before the fall into sin, when Adam and Eve were still in the Garden of Eden, survival was not at stake. But now, death will be an imminent threat.2
