Ephesians 6:5–9 in its immediate context

Ephesians 6:5–9 (ESV)

5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,

Ephesians 6:5–9 is part of Paul’s instructions for family life (Ephesians 5:22 – 6:9). Slaves and masters were considered part of the household. These household codes (Genesis 1:1; Ephesians 5:22 – 6:9) arise from a background of teaching regarding wise living (Ephesians 5:15–20) and describe the behaviour of the believer who is filled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) in terms of submission within ordered relationships (Ephesians 5:21 – 6:9).1
