Through the apostle Paul the Lord had instructed his people to put off their garments of sin and put on garments of Christ’s righteousness (Ephesians 4:22–24; Colossians 3:8–14; Revelation 3:18). In the face of “the kings of the whole world” (Revelation 16:14) listening to the deception of the demonic spirits, the common people John addresses are instructed not to listen to their deception but to stay with the righteousness they have received from Christ. When Christ comes in judgment (whether on the Last Day or through another event that may cost them their life), they will not have time to cover their nakedness.
15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)
