Sermon Outline for 1 Kings 15:27-16:7

1 Kings 15:27–16:7 (ESV)

27 Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him. And Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, for Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.

The central matters in the sermon can be:

1: Baasha—his person and appearance. His low background, his strong personality, the regicide with all its consequences (fear of family, intimidation of the people, always suspicion). Demonizing and silencing your opponent.

2: The prophet Jehu as critical companion of the king; a king needs such a person. Allow criticism in your life!

3: The ancient sin of Jeroboam—worship of bull calves, worship according to one’s own preference and taste—is not eradicated and remains contagious.

4: God, who leads history and keeps room open for human action and human sins, nevertheless turns against Baasha. God is love, but his patience will eventually come to an end.

5: This history shows the wrong example of kingship and leadership. Who is the good, honest, and serving king, who promotes the edification of his people?

6: Despite divisions, Israel and Judah remain God’s one people together.
