Structure and outline of 2 Peter 3:8-10

2 Peter 3:11–13 (ESV)

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,

2 Peter 3:8–10 is part of the closing section of the letter where Peter calls believers to pursue holiness (2 Peter 3:1–18a). This section can be further subdivided as follows:1

- Body closing: a call to holiness (2 Peter 3:1–18a)

  1. A call to remember prophetic and apostolic teaching (2 Peter 3:1–2)

  2. The scoffers of the last days (2 Peter 3:3–7)

  3. One day is as a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8–10)

  4. Living in the light of the end (2 Peter 3:11–13)

In light of God’s generous patience with sinners as well as the certainty of future judgment, how should Christian believers live? What should we expect from the future? Those are two questions that Peter answers in 2 Peter 3:11–13. He will teach us that final judgment is a call to live holy and godly lives (2 Peter 3:11) as we look forward to an eternal future in a perfect new world characterized by righteousness (2 Peter 3:12–13).
