Peter wants to encourage believers by confirming to them that the promises made by God are trustworthy and the presence of the false teachers is actually a confirmation of God’s Word. Instead of being taken in by them, believers should pursue wholesome thinking and godly living. Not content with affirming the presence of false teachers, Peter goes on to explain why their teaching is not worthy of consideration. There is ample evidence from history that God intervenes in this world and thus every reason to believe that he will do so again in the future. He has promised to do so and he is faithful to his promises.
