  2. Exposition

How many letters had Paul written by the time Peter wrote his letter?

2 Peter 3:16 (ESV)

16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.

Paul also wrote to the churches in Asia Minor, and he also visited them. It is likely that the church to which Peter is writing either knew Paul personally or had in their possession some of his letters. Perhaps Galatians, Ephesians, and Colossians were known to them, though we cannot say with certainty.1 We do not know exactly how many of Paul’s other letters were circulating in these churches at the time (see Colossians 4:16), though Peter seems to suggests that a collection was in existence at the time of writing and read in Christian worship (alongside other Old Testament Scriptures).2 Extra-biblical evidence confirms the existence of a corpus of Paul’s letters by the end of the first century.3
