9Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, I will be your head.”
Jephthah is cautious. He has been betrayed by these people before. Now that he has them at his mercy, he looks for a guarantee that they will deliver on their promises—take him home again to fight Ammon—before he becomes their head.
