Prior to the exile, God expressed his disapproval and rejection of their worship (Isaiah 1:11–13; Jeremiah 6:20; Amos 5:21). God’s rejection of their worship is coupled with the outpouring of his wrath, which Israel experienced through the exile. God had warned Israel of this through Jeremiah. God said, "When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence” (Jeremiah 14:12). God’s people were created and redeemed to glorify God’s name. When they fail to fulfil this primary purpose of their life, they arouse the fierce anger of God.
10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the LORD of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand.
