Paul wrote in the time of the Pax Romana
(Roman Peace). In large parts of the immense Roman Empire, the people enjoyed safety and stability. The early readers of this letter understood therefore the words peace
and security
quite well.
But the apostle warns them to not be mistaken. Do not relax and fall asleep with the thought that it will probably stay this way. For just like labour pains suddenly overcome a pregnant woman, so the day of the Lord will come. Whoever has not prepared for this will be lost forever (see 2 Thessalonians 1:9). We may note anew how much we hear Jesus’ serious warning in Paul’s alarming words (Matthew 24:37–39).
3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
