1 Thessalonians 5:6 (ESV)

6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.

A Christian is supposed to be awake. Again, it is surprising that here too the words of Jesus shine through in what the apostle writes. Once Jesus spoke about five foolish and five wise virgins (Matthew 25:1–13). The wise virgins brought spare oil along, in case the groom took longer than expected, but the foolish virgins did not take that into account, which resulted in them not being able to join the marriage feast.

In short: we are warned! Live in this world filled with expectation. Look forward with longing to the return of Jesus. Prepare yourself for it and let it determine your agenda. The verb to be sober urges us to be watchful (see also 1 Peter 5:8) and especially to not get too wrapped up in the here and now.
