Micah 5:5 (ESV)

5 And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men;

Peace (Hebrew: shalom) means not only that there is no (more) war, but also that everything is good, great, and lacking nothing. It is the situation where the people will experience maximum well-being. God has already promised Israel these blessings when they were on their way to the Promised Land. Leviticus 26:6 reads: I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. But the condition for the blessing is: If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them (Leviticus 26:3).

In the end, true peace is possible through Christ. This was already prophesied by Isaiah: he (Christ) is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Therefore the angels sang peace on earth at his birth (Luke 2:14). He brings about this peace through his suffering and death: upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace (Isaiah 53:5). And Paul says about the work of the Messiah: making peace by the blood of his cross (Colossians 1:20).
