1 Kings 10 in the context of the book 1 Kings

1 Kings 10:1–13 (ESV)

1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.

Experienced Bible readers already know that shortly after this visit, Solomon’s weakness and vulnerability comes to light (1 Kings 11:1–43). Up to now, his kingship showed an upward trend.

Here is a broad overview of the preceding chapters:

  • 1 Kings 3: Solomon’s wisdom

  • 1 Kings 4: Solomon’s officials; his greatness

  • 1 Kings 5: The extensive reign; all that was needed in the palace; Solomon’s wisdom, proverbs, and songs; preparations for the building of the temple

  • 1 Kings 6: The building of the temple

  • 1 Kings 7: The building of the palace and the temple’s furnishings

  • 1 Kings 8: Dedication of the temple; prayer of dedication

  • 1 Kings 9: God’s promise to Solomon; a warning; other undertakings of Solomon

  • 1 Kings 10: Visit from Sheba; Solomon’s wealth

So, the visit of the queen of Sheba is the pinnacle of Solomon’s kingship. After this his glory wanes rapidly. This overview shows us: God’s intention with his people and his king is glory, beauty, wealth—but this wealth demands a strong foundation. And even when the foundation is present, such as with Solomon (think of the wisdom God gave him and his very pious prayer), it still shows to be very fragile. Also the father of Solomon, David, the man after God’s heart, had his weak sides—will there ever be a king who is wholly strong and trustworthy?
