This list of plagues contrasts with the atmosphere that prevails in the arrogant Babylons of history as these cities or civilizations make the most of their earth-centred self-sufficiency—that is, the celebrating of life and feasting and luxury. Her fall means that life and luxury shall all be replaced by death and famine and as a result, the atmosphere dominating her existence will be one of lamentation, mourning, and sorrow. Further, it should be noted that “death” and “famine” characterize the list of plagues God mentioned in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 28; hence Ezekiel 5:17; Ezekiel 14:21).
8 For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
