What does the cry “Alas, alas” mean?

Revelation 18:10 (ESV)

10 They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

The Greek word used here sounds like the groan a person makes in the face of grief or despair or lamentation. Its repetition indicates repeated groaning. Here it is a wail of self-pity (see further Ezekiel 27:29–36).
