Hebrews 12:22 reads: But (instead of Mount Sinai) you have come to Mount Zion.
The word come (close to)
is a word that is especially used for the priests; they come close to God with their work and sacrifices. They stand close by God, in his presence, in his environment.
That now applies to all believers, who together form a royal priesthood (see 1 Peter 2:9) with sacrifices of praise and love (Hebrews 13:15–16). They are those who draw near
(Hebrews 10:1) and they know the confidential relationship with God. Proserchomai (ESV: come to; of which the word proselyte is derived) means to draw near, to appear before, to stand for
(see also Hebrews 4:16, Hebrews 7:25, Hebrews 10:22, Hebrews 11:6).
We may live in the presence of God, and when we pray, we search for God’s face and we approach him in heaven. Also, when we come together as congregation, we draw near to the throne of God and we are united with the heavenly liturgy—a combined worship service!
