1 Thessalonians 5:13 (ESV)

13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

With power (the Greek word huperekperissou is strong) all the members of the church are once again instructed to appreciate their leaders in the church. That was apparently necessary for the Thessalonians. The focus should not be on the person but on the pastoral and governing work they did within Christ’s church. This exhortation can also be instructive for today.

Of decisive importance within a church is that peace prevails. This creates the space in which mutual love can best develop, even if we have to address each other about ungodly behaviour. It is exactly such a church where people live peacefully with each other that is attractive.
