In response to Moses’ second question about who God was, God then joined his personal name “I am” to the revelation that he is the same God that Israel’s fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob worshipped. He is the God of the covenant. “Covenant” refers to the relationship between God and the people whom he chose out of the earth. When we speak about the covenant we are talking about God’s promise to be our God and that we should be his people. The covenant is God saying, “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” God told Adam and Eve that he was their God and they were his people. God told Noah and his family that he was their God, and they would be his people. God said the same thing to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God initiated the covenant relationship, and every time he promised believers that he would be their God, and they would be his people, he included their children in the promises and obligations of the covenant.
15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
