Psalm 4:1–8 (ESV)

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

Psalm 4:4 is a command for the ages. We have all been there. We have all struggled with sinful anger to one degree or the next. Even as God’s redeemed people, who have been filled with the Spirit, we need to fight against sinful anger. Paul quotes this command and then gives two more alongside it to help us battle sinful anger. Ephesians 4:26–27: In your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry and do not give the devil a foothold. Oh, may we take these commands to heart, so that sinful anger will never hold sway in our hearts! For how much better off would we be if, when things do not go right on the farm or the job site, instead of flying off in a fit of rage, we searched our hearts in silent reflection? How much better off would our marriages, families, and friendships be if we refused to go to bed seething with anger and resentment? And how much better would we be if we did the same when sometimes decisions are made in the church that we find difficult to accept? In your anger do not sin...search your hearts and be silent...do not give the devil a foothold.
